Latide is an earring sculpture desin based on the fingerprint. Lat means latent, ide means identity. The goal is to increase people’s awareness of their uniqueness and the value of expressing that individuality through fashion.
From the beggining, I was interested in the way people shopped. They enjoy buying different clothes, shoes and bags because everyone wants to be unique and different. People do not want others copying them or buy the same things as them. The reality, however, is people often follow and conform to the trends in fashion and buy the most popular items. So why is it that people want to be unique and yet still be part of the crowd?
This paradox inspired two questions for me:
● How do fashion choices communicate a person's ability to connect and find the desired information in an urban environment?
● How does fashion comminicate a person's values in an urban enviromennt?
Transformarion
According to the research, although a person’s fingerprints are unique, it is still divided into five styles: Arch, tented arch, left loop, right loop and whorl which listed on the left side.
Based on the five style types of fingerprints, I created codes on the left side to help build and transform the large shape of fingerprint to the earring design. Then use each part of the consumer’s fingerprint to re-arrange the shape and flow for the earring design. The consumer can decide the size of the earring. Outgoing people can choose more exaggerated can crazy sizes. Less outgoing people can choose a compact style.
These two examples show how different designs will look based on the different fingerprint styles. During the transformation, earring sculpture designs combine the designer’s aesthetic and consumer’s personality and request. The result is each piece is unique and only one of a kind that belongs to the individual.
